Gallifreyan Guard Rifle – Variations ???

Last updated on June 7, 2026

I was looking around the web this evening and came across a screenshot from the Season 9 episode “Hell Bent” and noticed that there seems to be a variant of the rifle. If you look closely, the woman in the middle is holding a rifle that lacks the round things in the middle and the barrel seems to be more of snub nosed shotgun type. Other things I picked up were that none of them had sidearms in their leg drops and that the guard on the right of the three, has a different helmet and racing stripes on his uniform.

I’m getting ready to go through the episode and pull some more screenshots for research purposes. It would be nice to be able to finish my first rifle, make a mold of it, then create the variant(s). This makes a total of 3 different variations on the rifle so far, wonder how many more there are ???

  • Variant One – Seen in the “Day of the Doctor” has an almost flamethrower looking barrel tip
  • Variant Two – Seen in “Hell Bent” has the conical end at the barrel tip
  • Variant Three – Seen in “Hell Bent” has a shorter barrel and no round things in the middle

Presently the screenshots I had taken are lost on my PC but here’s some shots from sources showing the rifle in its various forms:

Here’s a set of pics from an auction house in Bristol where a screen used prop sold for 800 GBP.

I am still in the process of getting my life sorted back out and this is one of the things I plan to be working on once I can find the files on my computer. It’s honestly amazing how things can get lost on hard drives.

UPDATE 6/4/2026: So I’ve decided to dive back into this project and get working on things to actually get these all brought to life so I can hang them on the wall at some point. I found the images I was looking for buried deep in the depths of my 16 terabytes of storage space so that was a bonus, that means the 3D models are there as well since I have a good habit of keeping the images of my models along with the models. Here’s a look at where I left off on them:

As you can see in the images of the models, there are definitely at least 3 different versions which would make some sense based on modern weapons standards where you would have a close combat weapon, long range weapon, and intermediate weapon to cover various situations. To see a squad carrying all 3 variants would imply that they were prepared to handle most any situation the Doctor may have thrown at them… except up close and personal because they aren’t carrying sidearms in their holsters.

UPDATE 6/7/2026: MORE RESEARCH AND REVELATION: So having finally located my reference pictures I was looking at them some more and think I may be mistaken on the number of variations. Looking at the images from “Day of the Doctor” I noticed that what I saw may not have been correctly interpreted and instead of the little flamethrower type thing, it was actually light reflecting on the bottom of the muzzle. So now I am going to go back into the episode and pull some fresh reference pics and get as close up as I can and as clear as I can to make sure what I put out there is correct.

At the moment, my workshop and house is a complete disaster. I’m not going to go into details suffice to say I am back home where I belong, never should have left in the first place, and will be rebuilding the shop and that means getting a couple of FDM 3D printers to make props with again and to continue expanding my skills. I have found that FDM printers work best for props like this so that’s something I will be working towards presently. Keep watching the site for updates and more importantly, make sure you’re up to date on YouTube because in the very near future I will be making new episodes.
