The Best Sandpaper Is the One You Actually Use

Sandpaper may be one of the simplest tools in the workshop, yet it is remarkably easy to overthink. Walk into a hardware store and you will find shelves filled with different grits, colors, backing materials, sheets, discs, belts, sponges, sanding blocks, and specialty abrasives intended for every material imaginable. What should be a straightforward purchase can quickly begin to feel like a technical decision that requires charts, formulas, and a carefully planned sequence.

It really does not need to be that complicated.

The best sandpaper is usually the sandpaper you already have, provided it is reasonably suited to the job and you are willing to use it. An ordinary sheet of abrasive paper in the hands of someone actually working will accomplish more than an expensive assortment stored away because its owner is afraid of using the wrong grit.

Grit Numbers Are Only a Starting Point

The basic idea behind sandpaper grits is easy to understand. Lower numbers are coarse and remove material quickly, while higher numbers are finer and leave a smoother surface. Coarse paper is useful for leveling rough wood, removing stubborn finishes, softening damaged edges, and eliminating deep scratches. Medium grits refine the surface, and finer grits prepare it for paint, stain, oil, varnish, or another type of finish.

Knowing that much will carry you through most ordinary projects.

A sheet of 60- or 80-grit paper can make quick work of a rough or badly damaged surface. Something in the range of 100 to 120 grit is often useful for general smoothing, while 150 or 180 grit will prepare many woodworking projects for finishing. Fine paper around 220 grit is often used for light sanding between coats of finish or for smoothing a surface that is already in good condition.

You do not need to own every grit between the coarsest paper on the shelf and the finest abrasive used by an automotive painter. For most home workshops, a small assortment of common grits is enough. The condition of the project matters more than whether your sandpaper collection is complete.

Let the Surface Tell You Where to Begin

The surface in front of you should determine the sandpaper you use, not a rigid rule found on a chart.

If a board is rough from the sawmill, covered in weathered fibers, or still showing deep machine marks, fine sandpaper will accomplish very little. You may rub away for a long time without meaningfully changing the surface. In that situation, a coarser grit is not careless or crude. It is simply the correct tool for removing the damage efficiently.

On the other hand, beginning with extremely coarse paper on an already smooth piece of wood can create more work. Deep scratches must eventually be removed, and every unnecessary scratch adds another sanding step. The goal is to begin with the coarsest paper genuinely needed, not the coarsest paper available.

Sometimes the correct starting tool is not sandpaper at all. A scraper may remove dried glue more cleanly. A hand plane may flatten a board faster. A file may shape an edge with greater control. A paint scraper or chemical stripper may be more effective on a heavy old finish. Sandpaper is extremely useful, but it does not have to perform every job in the workshop.

You Do Not Have to Use Every Grit

Many people approach sanding as though every grit must be used in perfect numerical order. They begin with one sheet, move to the next available number, and continue through an entire stack because they believe skipping a grit will ruin the project.

In most cases, that is unnecessary.

The purpose of moving to a finer grit is to remove the scratches left by the paper used before it. As long as the next grit can remove those scratches without unreasonable effort, there is no need to stop at every number along the way. A progression from 80 grit to 120 and then 180 may be perfectly suitable. Another project may only need 120 followed by 180. A painted utility shelf might be ready after a quick sanding with 120 or 150 grit.

The exact numbers are less important than the surface they leave behind. Look at the wood rather than the label on the paper. When the deeper scratches are gone and the surface has become evenly smooth, the sandpaper has done its job.

Knowing When the Sanding Is Finished

The hardest part of sanding is sometimes knowing when to stop.

There is always a finer grit available, and once you begin chasing a flawless surface it is easy to keep sanding long after the project is ready for the next step. Additional sanding does not automatically improve the result. It can waste time, soften crisp edges, round corners, remove details, and occasionally make a surface less receptive to stain.

The correct stopping point depends on what you intend to do next.

A surface that will be painted does not normally need to be polished like fine furniture. Paint can hide minor color variations and shallow marks, although it will not hide every ridge or damaged edge. For many painted projects, sanding through a medium grit is entirely adequate.

Wood that will receive stain or a clear finish may benefit from a smoother surface, but even here there is a practical limit. Sanding wood extremely fine can close the surface and reduce the amount of stain it absorbs. The result may be lighter or less even than expected. On many common woods, stopping around 150 or 180 grit provides a good balance between smoothness and finish absorption.

When sanding between coats of varnish, lacquer, polyurethane, or another film finish, the purpose is usually not to remove the finish. You are simply knocking down dust nibs, small imperfections, and areas of roughness before applying the next coat. Fine sandpaper or a sanding pad used lightly is normally enough.

A good surface does not need to satisfy a laboratory measurement. Brush or vacuum away the dust, look across the work under angled light, and run your hand over it. Your eyes will reveal scratches and uneven patches, while your fingertips will often detect roughness that is difficult to see. When the surface looks even, feels appropriate for the intended finish, and no obvious defects remain, sanding is complete.

Fresh Sandpaper Makes a Difference

People often continue using a worn sheet of sandpaper because it still looks like sandpaper. The backing is intact, the color has not changed much, and there may still be abrasive material visible. Nevertheless, the paper may have stopped cutting effectively.

When sandpaper wears out or becomes clogged with dust and finish, sanding begins to feel strangely unproductive. You rub the same area repeatedly, apply more pressure, and create plenty of heat without removing much material. At that point, replacing the paper is usually more economical than continuing to fight it.

Fresh sandpaper does not have to be forced. It produces dust, changes the surface, and allows you to work with moderate pressure. Excessive pressure can clog the abrasive more quickly, create heat, deepen scratches, and make hand sanding unnecessarily tiring. Let the sharp abrasive grains perform the cutting.

Cleaning sanding belts, discs, and reusable abrasive blocks can extend their life, but ordinary sheets should still be replaced when they stop working well. Sandpaper is a consumable tool. Using it until it becomes completely smooth is rarely a genuine savings.

Pay Attention to the Grain

Wood grain can make sanding scratches either disappear or become painfully obvious.

When sanding by hand, the final passes should generally follow the direction of the grain. Scratches running across the grain can become especially visible after stain or clear finish is applied. They may not seem serious while the wood is covered in sanding dust, but once the surface darkens under finish, every cross-grain mark can stand out.

There are times when sanding at a slight angle helps level a rough surface or remove a stubborn mark. That is fine during the earlier stages. The important thing is to finish with the grain so the remaining scratches blend naturally into the wood.

Removing the dust afterward is just as important. Dust left in corners, pores, and surface imperfections can interfere with finish adhesion and create the very roughness you just spent time removing. A vacuum, soft brush, or clean cloth is usually enough to prepare the project for the next step.

Sanding Does Not Need to Become a Science Project

There is a great deal to learn about abrasives. Different minerals cut differently. Backing materials affect flexibility and durability. Some papers are designed to resist clogging, while others are intended for wet sanding, metalworking, automotive finishes, or powered equipment. For specialized work, these details can matter.

Most everyday projects, however, do not require an encyclopedic understanding of abrasive technology.

You do not need the perfect brand, the perfect progression, the perfect sanding block, or a cabinet filled with every grit manufactured. You need paper that cuts, a grit that makes sense for the surface, and enough patience to remove the defects that matter.

Choose a sensible starting point, use the sandpaper until the surface improves, change to a finer grit when the remaining scratches require it, and stop when the project is ready for finish. That simple approach has worked in workshops for generations.

The finest sandpaper in the world cannot improve a project while it remains unopened in a drawer. The inexpensive sheet wrapped around an old wooden block may be the better tool simply because someone is using it.

That is why the best sandpaper is not necessarily the newest, most expensive, or most specialized.

The best sandpaper is the one you actually use.
